Our library hosted an event by the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) this past week. I grabbed the boys and we headed over. It was a lot of fun, and informative. Shane had to work so he missed it, but I found out that they were going to have a smaller event on Saturday so we headed that way so Shane could see the things. There was a man there who builds model castles, and Drake asked lots and lots of questions. We had chicken, watermelon, lemonade, and bread while we were there. The kids got to dress up in some medieval garb and sit on the peacock throne next to the banner of our barony.
There were demonstrations of light fighting (rapiers) and heavy fighting (sword and shield). The boys really enjoyed that, I think because they like to sword fight at home. The kids were allowed to spar with the SCA members with boffers (a styrofoam sword). Drake loved that and did it a couple of times.
There was a person there who is very skilled in calligraphy, and she wrote peoples names for them. The library handed out a book for everyone who was there. It is a very nice pop-up book about Castles. The boys love it and want me to read it all of the time.
We had a really enjoyable time. We are toying with the idea of joining SCA, as we all love medieval things. The nice thing about SCA is that it isn't just fighting, they do almost anything that you can think of from that time period. If you want to check them out the website is: www.sca.org
